Oakland Anti-Casino Petition Heads to Washington

SAN LEANDRO, California – As reported by the Daily Review: "Parents, politicans and a principal Tuesday pulled another "P" out of their arsenal — petitions — to protest an Oakland gambling casino.

"Standing in the Wilson Elementary School auditorium, three miles south of the proposed Koi Nation Indian Gaming Casino near Oakland International Airport, three dozen people cheered the collection of nearly 2,500 signatures on the anti-casino petitions.

"A quick perusal of the signatures showed names from Alameda, Berkeley, Emeryville, Hayward, Oakland and San Leandro.

"Alameda County Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker, who launched the petition drive three weeks ago, handed the petitions to San Leandro Councilman Tony Santos. Santos will present the documents to the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs on Friday while on a trip to Washington, D.C.

"…The Koi Nation, a federally recognized American Indian tribe, wants to build the casino and a resort on 35 acres off Doolittle Drive near Pardee Drive and Swan Way, along San Leandro Bay…"
