NZ district pushes for tougher gaming rules

15 May 2008

NEW ZEALAND -- As reported by the Gisborne Herald: "The council's tough stance on gaming machine operators is continuing, with the Environment and Policy Committee recommending that the district retain an amended "sinking lid" policy.

"It proposes that the 'lid' sink further, with the maximum number of gaming machines allowed dropping from 24 to 18 in cases where two or more clubs merged.

"The 'sinking lid; policy means no new gaming machine venues can open and that existing venues cannot increase their number of gaming machines.

"...After reading a report, members of the Environment and Policy Committee moved to retain the policy.

"...The report, prepared by environmental health officer Angela Joe, says there are 15 premises operating 214 gaming machines in the Gisborne District..."
