NYRA Defends Security at Track After Van Slips Through

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- As reported by the Saratogian: "A local catering firm employee was surprised at how easily his van was allowed through a locked gate at Saratoga Race Course recently.

"Wes Shinn said guards never asked for identification or checked to see what was in his vehicle, prompting concerns about his own safety and that of thousands of other people who visit the track on any given day.

"But New York Racing Association security chief Ken Cook said background checks are done on all firms that do business with the track prior to the season's start. Also, trained dogs sweep the grounds before the gates open each day.

"'People may not see the entire picture,' he said. 'There's a lot more security now here than there was even last year.' <>p>"…Track security has been increased this year in the wake of last summer's pari-mutuel clerk scandal involving fraud and money laundering. Some of the most high-profile horse owners and trainers have not been allowed to bring friends and immediate family members to barn areas.

"…NYRA has a full-time, year-round security force of about 180 people to cover Saratoga, Aqueduct and Belmont, Cook said…"
