NYRA chairman expected confirmed

ALBANY, New York -- As reported by the New York Times Union: "The Senate is expected to confirm Sen. John Sabini today as the next chairman of the Racing and Wagering Board, thereby depleting the emerging Democratic minority by one member.

"Besides today's main event -- passing legislation restricting the growth of real estate taxes -- the Senate's return to the Capitol today after a six-week break will deal with a handful of confirmations.

"Chief among them is allowing a Democrat to reign over the three-member racing and wagering commission for the first time since 1995, when Gov. Mario M. Cuomo's appointee, Richard Corbisiero, authorized the Oneida Indian Nation to install slot machines without a revenue-sharing deal with the state.

"Sabini's promotion to the state regulatory agency will come with a pay raise -- to $120,000 instead of the base legislative pay of $79,500 and $9,500 stipend -- while giving Senate Republicans some breathing room during partisan chamber confrontations..."
