NY Bishops Oppose Expanded Gambling

NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Times Union: "The New York State Catholic Conference has begun a campaign against expanded gambling, saying the state can't afford the social cost.

"The conference, which represents the bishops, is urging legislators and Gov. George Pataki to reject repeal of the constitutional ban on casinos. It is also calling for Pataki to drop his plan to expand video lottery terminal casinos.

"Richard E. Barnes, conference executive director, said the bishops aren't trying to be prohibitionists. He said the social ills that come with increased gambling are not in the state's moral or economic interests…"
