Nurse 'Double Dipped' to Pay Gambling Debts

VANCOUVER, Canada -- As reported by the Vancouver Sun: ``A former Riverview Hospital nurse fired for abusing sick leave to pay off gambling bills has been given a chance to get her job back.

``… the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union argued the first arbitrator failed to consider the effects of her gambling addiction on her conduct.

``…Ramdharee was fired in December 2001 after staff discovered she was "double dipping" on pay. Between November 1998 and 2001 she called in sick repeatedly and used the time off to work a second job while receiving sick benefits from Riverview.

``The nurse said she spent most of her free time at casinos or bingo halls, where she lost $50 to $150 a day, sometimes as much as $600…She has since found a new job and joined Gamblers Anonymous…"
