Nunavut City Passes On Lottery Responsibilities

IQALUIT, Nunavut – As reported by CBC North: "The city of Iqaluit says it's getting out of the lottery licensing business.

"The city announced Wednesday it was passing responsibility for approving bingo, Nevada tickets and other lotteries back to the government of Nunavut.

"The decision comes after months of debate over a licence for the John Howard Society.

"The society, which helps rehabilitate inmates back into society, relies on bingos to fund its Iqaluit programs. It also holds classes in judo for youth and provides country food to prisoners in the south.

"…City council has been reluctant to issue a licence to the society, saying it had concerns about how bingo funds were being used.

"…The city's decision means that groups will have to deal directly with the government of Nunavut…"
