Number 13 Not Unlucky for Powerball Players

UNITED STATES – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Even though Friday the 13th is right around the corner, Powerball(R) players don't seem daunted by the longstanding superstition surrounding the number. In fact, the number 13 has always had a special significance in the Powerball Lottery. Oddly enough, this little "unlucky" number has hit quite a few jackpots.

"Most people's perception is that the number thirteen is an unlucky number to play when you play the lottery. But data from Powerball has shown that the number thirteen is in fact quite lucky for Powerball Players," said Randy Davis, President, CEO of the Louisiana Lottery Corporation, and Chair of Powerball.

When it comes to picking lucky numbers, most people think of the number seven, but according to Powerball data, the lucky number seven isn't quite as lucky as the number 13. Throughout Powerball history, the number 13 has always managed to edge out the lucky number seven in wins. For example, since 1992 when Powerball started, the total amount won from jackpots including the number 13 is around $1.3 billion, ironically. The number seven follows close behind with $1.18 billion in jackpot wins. Twenty-three jackpot winning combinations have had the number 13 in them (13%), versus 22 with the number seven. And out of 1,363 drawings since Powerball began, there have been 159 drawings with the number 13 vs. 152 with the number seven.

This also happens to be the 13th anniversary for Powerball, and what a year it's been. In the past four months seven winners have taken home jackpots totaling over $186.6 million dollars. In a recent drawing, 110 winners won between $100,000-$500,000 on numbers from a fortune cookie. The popular impression that the number 13 is unlucky has certainly proven to be any thing but for Powerball.

The largest Powerball jackpot ever won by a single-ticket holder was $314.9 million by a West Virginia man in 2002 on Christmas Day. Powerball is now played in 27 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
