Nova Scotia Sets Forth Casino Plan13 August 2004NOVA SCOTIA – As reported by the Halifax Herald: "The provincial government is calling it the first step toward the future of gambling. "But critics say the province got off on the wrong foot. "A discussion paper on gambling, released Thursday, set out goals for an economically viable and socially responsible industry. "…[Scott Logan, assistant deputy minister with the Office of Health Promotion] and Marie Mullally, president of the Nova Scotia Gaming Corp., were appointed to get people's views on gaming and on solutions for problem gambling. "…But after listening to the presentation, NDP critic Bill Estabrooks said, 'All we have is smoke and mirrors.' "…Liberal gaming critic Diana Whalen, who also attended, was similarly unimpressed. "…The framework for the review was developed over the last year. Led by the gaming corporation and the Office of Health Promotion, the committee also included the Atlantic Lottery Corp., Casino Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Alcohol and Gaming Authority.
