Nova Scotia Government, Atlantic Lottery Sued

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – As reported by the Canadian Press: "The legal wheels were set in motion Tuesday for a potential class-action lawsuit against the Nova Scotia government and the Atlantic Lottery Corp. over video lottery terminals, often referred to by critics as the crack cocaine of gaming.

"A notice of intention to sue was filed in Nova Scotia Supreme Court by lawyers for Bernie Walsh, a recovering gaming addict and anti-gambling crusader who has lobbied the province for years to ban the machines.

"If the case proceeds, it will join a growing number of similar cases in Ontario and Quebec meant to force provincial governments to defend the social costs of their lucrative gambling policies.

"The statement of claim filed in Nova Scotia alleges the government either did not study the impact of VLTs when they were introduced in the early 1990s, or ignored evidence of their harmful effects.

"…The class-action suit could possibly seek millions of dollars in damages on behalf of gambling addicts in the province.

"While he wants compensation for his losses, the man at the centre of the legal fight said his ultimate objective is to get a judge to banish the machines from the province…"
