Nova Scotia Gambling Stats May Include Suicides5 May 2004HALIFAX -- As reported by the CBC: ``The Nova Scotia government may add the number of gambling addicts who kill themselves to its annual gaming statistics. ``The province will make close to $170 million this year from gambling and lottery sales, but the finance minister says he cannot quantify the social costs. ``Peter Christie says Nova Scotia may start counting the number of gambling-related suicides. "Across the country [medical examiners] are trying to determine what can be attributed directly to suicides related to gambling addictions.' ``...It's difficult to come up with accurate statistics. Even if the province can quantify the number of gambling deaths, Christie won't say if the government will consider getting out of the gaming business..." |
