North Dakota House Rejects Gambling Bill

BISMARCK, North Dakota – As reported by the North Dakota Forum: "North Dakota House members decided Thursday they've had enough with expanding gambling in the state and killed a poker bill and a new variety of pari-mutuel betting.

"House Bill 1390, the pari-mutuel bill, would have helped support the North Dakota Horse Park in Fargo. It died when only 45 representatives voted in favor.

"…The bill would have legalized video terminals that take bets on previously run races from across the country. It works by showing the bettor anonymous information about the horses and jockeys in the race and withholding race results.

"…The poker bill would have legalized poker tournaments that could be held anytime at a charity's discretion. Poker tournaments are now limited to two tournaments a year.

"The bill lost on a 59-33 vote. Supporters said the charitable gaming industry wants the bill in order to compete with the tribal casinos…"
