North Carolina Senators Call for Problem Gambling Program12 May 2005NORTH CAROLINA – As reported by the Winston-Salem Journal: "North Carolina is one of just two states that don't offer programs to help problem gamblers, and senators crafting a bill to create a state lottery say that a program to help compulsive gamblers should be included. "Neither the lottery proposal passed by the state House last month nor the lottery provisions passed by the state Senate as part of the chamber's budget proposal last week provides for a program to deal with problem gamblers. "After the Senate Lottery Committee had a hearing on the topic yesterday, Sen. Tony Rand, the committee's chairman, said he has always included such programs in past lottery bills. "…Legislators could give the responsibility for running such a program to the commission that would be appointed to manage the lottery, Rand said. "Senators on the panel heard a variety of views on how big a problem compulsive gambling could be if the state starts a lottery…" |
