North Carolina GOP Lottery-Style Promo Causes Concern

NORTH CAROLINA – As reported by the North Carolina News Observer: "The party Friday unveiled its 'Lucky 7' promotion to make sure that voters realize that casting a vote marked on the ballot for the straight party ticket will not include a vote for President Bush or judicial candidates for five statewide seats. This year marks the first time judicial races are nonpartisan, which means voters won't know the candidates' party affiliation when they look at the ballot.

"The '7' refers to casting seven votes -- for Bush, the five judges and the straight Republican ticket that picks up the rest of the candidates. The promotion appears in e-mail to party activists, and there will be a reference to it on the party's Web site.

"The problem, said the Rev. Mark Creech of the Christian Action League of North Carolina, is that the promotion looks like a lottery game, something Republicans say they oppose.

"…'For heaven's sake, they came up with the resolution at the convention against the lottery, and now they show what appears to be some sort of sympathy with gambling,' said Creech, the league's executive director and a Republican…"
