North Carolina Gambling Response Unclear

NORTH CAROLINA – As reported by the Charleston Daily Mail: "Kanawha County officials say they are getting an unclear response from state officials about their plans to restrict the locations of businesses with video gambling terminals, but Commissioner Kent Carper is determined to push forward with a moratorium and then an ordinance.

"…Meanwhile, Harrison County commissioners strongly support Kanawha County's efforts and want to follow in its footsteps.

"…Carper said he wishes the responses he has received from the Lottery Commission and the Alcohol Beverage Control Administration were so clear. He wrote letters to notify both agencies that the commissioners plan to adopt a 90-day moratorium on Feb. 19 on permitting new video lottery outlets to open in the county.

"The commissioners intend to follow that moratorium with an ordinance that would prohibit such outlets from opening in certain locations, such as within so many feet of an existing outlet.

"…The county wanted the agency's help because video lottery terminals can only be licensed at businesses with alcohol licenses…"
