Noro Virus Suspected in Flamingo Illness

A flulike illness that has stricken employees and guests at the Flamingo is believed to be caused by a type of Noro virus but the Clark County Health District won't have a final determination until today, a spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman, Jennifer Sizemore, said Monday any bacterial-related cause of the illness has been ruled out.

"We're operating under the assumption that it is Noro, but we won't have those results until tomorrow," she said.

Since Oct. 16, there have been about 200 people affected by the illness, which has such symptoms as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and headaches, according to Flamingo spokesman Robert Stewart.

He said that of the roughly 200 cases, about two-thirds have been employees and one-third have been guests. The number of reported cases dropped to less than 10.

"We continue to work with the health department to deep-chemical-clean rooms and public spaces," he said. "It appears reports of illnesses are declining substantially."
