No Evidence of Asian Organised Crime in Casino Raid

NEW ZEALAND – As reported by the New Zealand Press Association: ``Despite a bust on an illegal gambling den in Wellington on Friday night, being run under the guise of a Chinese social club, police say there's no evidence of links to organised international crime.

``Department of Internal Affairs gambling inspectors closed down the illegal den in an upstairs room in central Wellington, with assistance from four police and a fisheries officer.

``…Earlier the Department of Internal Affairs said the casino was believed to be linked to organised Asian crime.

``But Detective Inspector Harry Quinn, district crime manager for Wellington Police, said there was no strong evidence that any Asian organised crime group was dominating illicit gambling.

``…He said relative to the overall crime picture in Wellington, the contribution of illicit gambling was negligible and worth an infinitesimal amount in comparison to legitimate public gambling.

``…In a statement, director of the DIA's gaming and censorship group, Keith Manch, said the upstairs casino in Wellington's Cuba Mall was set up as a sophisticated gaming room with tables and dealers for baccarat, blackjack, poker and Chinese chess…"
