NJ proposal would restrict casino funding

NEW JERSEY -- As reported by the New Jersey Express Times: "Borough officials want to restrict what projects can be paid for with casino impact funding.

"A proposal developed by a coalition of Hellertown and Freemansburg boroughs and Lower Saucon Township would equally divide grant money derived from the Sands BethWorks Casino in Bethlehem among the five Northampton County municipalities bordering the city.

"Hellertown council on Monday recommended the coalition also designate that the funds would be used for casino impact projects that would not include recreation and parks.

"Available funds could rise as high as $1.7 million, borough Manager Charles Luthar said. Northampton County would receive half that amount to devote to countywide projects such as road repairs, Councilwoman Jennifer McKenna said.

"Of the money left over, 60 percent would be split among the bordering municipalities. Twenty percent would be set aside for affected communities that don't border the city, and the remaining 20 percent would go toward block grants that any bordering municipality could apply to receive…"
