Nipmuc Nation Keeps Options Open

MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Boston Herald: "A small Worcester area tribe with hopes of becoming a gambling powerhouse is keeping its options wide open when it comes to a casino location, eyeing land in several New England states, documents show.

"The Webster-based Nipmuc group has for years eyed sites on either side of the Massachusetts/Connecticut border, including land in Sturbridge, which straddles the line.

"But the report by the Minnesota-based Lakes Gaming Inc., quietly released a few months ago as part of an overview of its nationwide casino empire, makes it clear the Nipmucs are casting a much wider net in pursuing a gambling palace.

"The Nipmuc Nation is also considering Rhode Island and New Hampshire, reported Lakes, the tribe's deep-pocketed financial backer.

"…Meanwhile, Lakes is investing millions in the Nipmuc's effort to win official tribal status and open a giant gambling palace. Lakes so far has advanced the tribe $4.3 million, with that sum to be paid back, with interest, once the tribe has its casino, according to Lakes' report…"
