NIGC Under Fire

WASHINGTON, DC – As reported by the Native American Times: "The National Indian Gaming Commission has come under fire from two former members of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee for allegedly hurting the Indian gaming industry by 'expanding' the type of contracts they examine.

"That comes as the agency is taken to task for interfering in another aspect of Indian gaming.

"In a letter dated Dec. 14 and posted by Indianz.com, former Committee Chairman and retired Colorado Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell and Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye say they 'write on behalf of a number of Indian tribal governments that have contacted us expressing their concern over the Commission's review of non-management gaming contracts and, particularly, the Commission's conclusion that certain non-management contracts violate the sole proprietary interest requirement of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.'

"…Campbell and Inouye say they believe the NIGC may not even have the authority to pursue those contracts.

"…This is not the first time this month that the agency has come under fire for overreaching…"
