NHL Lockout Hurts Sports Lotteries

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – As reported by the CBC News: "With the National Hockey League lockout continuing, the people who profit from sports lotteries are feeling the pinch.

"Legal sports gambling is big business in Manitoba. Last year, Manitobans wagered $18 million on Sport Select. The provincial government received $6 million of that; the money went to health care, education and social services.

"But with no hockey to wager on, that profit is expected to drop substantially this year. Hockey is the most heavily wagered sport in Manitoba. Without it, fewer wagers are being made.

"…Lottery officials are hoping to offset the losses by offering new sports to wager on, such as soccer and college basketball…"
