Newham council loses bid to prevent Paddy Power betting shop

17 June 2013

NEWHAM, England -- Newham council in London has failed to prevent a new Paddy Power betting shop opening following a court challenge, The Guardian reported.

Paddy Power appealed against the council's decision to reject its application for an operator licence, the report explained.

Newham council contended that the addition of another Paddy Power betting shop, in a borough which already contains 80, would increase crime and antisocial behaviour, according to the Guardian report.

The district judge ruled there was no evidence granting a licence would lead to such and said the decision was wrong, the Guardian noted.
