New Zealand Launches New Problem Gambling Initiative

NEW ZEALAND – As reported by the New Zealand Herald: "An initiative to 'help a mate' out of compulsive gambling to be launched this month is a world first.

"The Gambling Problem Helpline said its 'Let's Help a Mate' initiative would target friends, relatives and associates of problem gamblers.

"…[Helpline chief executive Gary Clifford says,] 'Generally speaking, a friend or relative will be the first person to spot what's going on. We will be encouraging people to keep an eye on their friends and if they have a concern about a friend they phone us and we will get them some advice on what to do and that is a world first.'…"
