New York Tribe Approved for Gaming

SYRACUSE, New York – As reported by the Associated Press: "The National Indian Gaming Commission has approved a gaming ordinance for the Cayuga Indian Nation of New York, an attorney for the tribe said Thursday.

"Although the commission's approval allows the tribe to open a Class II gaming facility, the Cayugas remain locked in a legal battle over a parcel of commercial property in Union Springs.

"Tribal attorney Raymond Heslin said he filed a motion in federal court Thursday seeking a summary judgment in the dispute.

"A Class II license includes house bingo and other games of chance where players compete against each other. It does not include slot machines or other casino games.

"Cayuga spokesman Clint Halftown said approval of the nation's gaming ordinance 'is just another economic opportunity' for the tribe to explore. Halftown declined comment on the tribe's plans for the Union Springs parcel, a former auto parts store the tribe purchased in April for $105,000.

"…The tribal gaming ordinance is not site-specific but allows the Cayugas to conduct Class II games on Indian lands over which they have jurisdiction, Halftown said.
