New York Tribal Casino Deal Struck

NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Daily News: 'The state has struck a deal with the Cayuga Indian tribe that clears the way for a full-fledged casino in the Catskills.

"The agreement, announced yesterday by Gov. Pataki, gives the tribe $248 million to settle decades-old land claims.

"…The Cayuga casino, the first of three Indian gaming halls contemplated for the depressed Catskills resort region, will be built next to Monticello Raceway, which is owned by Empire Resorts, the Cayugas' partners.

"A two-hour drive from Manhattan, the $500 million, 585,000-square-foot casino will take away business from Atlantic City and two Indian casinos in Connecticut, Empire CEO Robert Berman said.

"…The Pataki deal is unusual most notably because the sovereign Cayugas will follow U.S. environmental laws, local business codes and enter into a tax parity compact with the state regarding Cayuga sales of alcohol, cigarettes and gasoline…"
