New York Officials Target Illegal Gambling Dens5 May 2005NEW YORK – As reported by the Queens Chronicle: "Elected officials in Flushing are taking aim at illegal gambling dens sprouting up in the area and are telling residents to keep them informed about suspicious activity. "At a press conference last Thursday in Councilman John Liu's office, he and State Senator Toby Stavisky said that gambling operations in houses as well as apartment buildings are proliferating. Unable to attend but supporting the cleanup efforts was Assemblyman Jimmy Meng. "…Both politicians urged residents to be the eyes and ears of the police to take action and when they see strangers at all hours of the day and night in their apartment buildings or at nearby houses. "…Liu pointed out that due to calls from residents on Maple Avenue, a three-story townhouse gambling den operation on the block was raided in February and several arrests were made…" |
