New York Governor, Speaker Point Fingers6 November 2003ALBANY, New York – As reported by the New York Times Herald-Record: "The gloves have come off in the battle between the state's two most powerful political leaders over who is to blame for the lack of progress on casinos in the Catskills. "Gov. George Pataki this week called Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver wrong for blocking attempts to legalize commercial casinos in the state several years ago. "Silver, in turn, questioned Pataki's mental capacity. "… The battle began last month when Silver, a Manhattan Democrat, accused Pataki, a Republican, of stalling progress on casinos for the Catskills. "This week, Pataki said delays were caused by politics within Indian tribes, and the casinos would have been up and running already had Silver not blocked a proposal to allow commercial casinos several years ago. "…Regardless of who's to blame, there has been significant frustration recently in trying to advance prospects for a Catskills casino…" |
