New York Governor Scales Back Casino Bill

ALBANY, New York – As reported by the New York Times: "Gov. George E. Pataki, whose call to authorize five major casinos in the Catskills was scuttled this year by opposition from environmentalists, lawmakers and the changing legal landscape concerning Indian lands, proposed a scaled-back bill on Thursday that would pave the way for just one casino in the Catskills.

"The governor's bill would allow the St. Regis Mohawks to go ahead with their plans to open a casino at Kutsher's Sports Academy in Monticello as part of a settlement of a land claim brought by the Akwesasne Mohawks.

"…It was uncertain that even the scaled-back bill would pass the Legislature. Officials in the Assembly said they would feel more comfortable going ahead with just one casino, and added that the settlement with the Mohawks seemed to have fewer complications…"
