New York Gambling May Fund Schools

ALBANY, New York – As reported by the New York Newsday: "Frustrated by the negotiating deadlock, Senate Republicans yesterday for the first time publicly offered a plan for improving education financing, proposing to spend an extra $6.3 billion statewide, largely from gambling money they originally found distasteful.

"Hurtling toward a court-ordered July 30 deadline to provide more aid to New York City schools, the Republicans embraced Gov. George Pataki's proposal to use video lottery terminals and projected even more profit than Pataki - though still less than the $9.5 billion the plaintiffs in the case are seeking.

"Pataki has estimated that up to 16 terminals would eventually generate at least $2 billion for schools; the Senate said as few as eight might produce $4.7 billion within five years…"
