New York County Supports Casino Legislation

NEW YORK – As reported by the Hudson Valley News: "Two resolutions made it to the floor of the Ulster County Legislature Thursday night, and after lengthy and lively debate, the legislature is on record supporting municipalities that declare their own opposition to casinos within their borders.

"One resolution, in essence a 'home rule' measure, allows municipalities to decide whether casinos should be located within its borders.

"…The second resolution specifically supported the Town of Saugerties, which the night before, adopted a resolution opposing a casino in their town.

"Richard Parete wanted that changed to having the county legislature oppose casinos anywhere in the county.

"…There was unanimous support from a large group of citizens, but the amendment failed to pass, because of concern from several Democrats and Republicans, that it was premature, because not all towns have spoken.

"Democrat Susan Zimet's amendment, to leave the resolution open-ended, so that names of municipalities that declare local opposition could be added, passed, and the resolution itself was then approved unanimously. For now, Gardiner, Marbletown, New Paltz, Plattekill, Saugerties, Shandaken and Woodstock have adopted anti-casino resolutions…"
