New York Casino Revenue to Boost Tourism11 May 2005ALBANY, New York – As reported by the Albany Daily Star: " A proposal to use casino revenue to boost tourism across the state has the backing of travel industry advocates, but one state leader doubts the money would be used wisely. "Lawmakers in the Senate and Assembly have proposed using up to 30 percent of the state's revenue share from Indian-owned casinos to boost New York's tourism industry. They said money to market New York to tourists around the nation and the world hasn't been enough to remain competitive. "'In order to be successful, we really need to invest,' said Dan Murphy, president of the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association. "But Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, said much of the money the state set aside for marketing went to promote Gov. George Pataki's image as much as it did to promote tourism. "…The bill, sponsored by majority members in both houses, would create a Tourism Economic Development Fund with more than $21 million, based on revenue generated from casinos already open…" |
