New tribal casino rules proposed

MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Cape Cod Times: "Mashpee selectmen have notified federal officials that new rules proposed for establishing casinos on tribal lands do not provide adequate protections for the interests of local communities.

"'The regulations should be revised to require far more extensive and formalized consultation with local governments so that the local impacts of gaming development will be fully explored,' a three-page letter endorsed by selectmen Monday night states.

"If adopted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the new regulations would make it more difficult for tribes to build casinos away from their main reservation lands.

"Because Mashpee Wampanoag tribal officials have indicated the tribe does not intend to build a casino in or near Mashpee if the tribe is granted federal recognition next year, the new rules will not likely affect Mashpee directly…"
