New opposition to Florida slot vote10 January 2008FLORIDA -- As reported by the Miami Herald: "Just 20 days from the election, a new anti-gambling coalition has emerged, uniting groups as diverse as greyhound advocates, mothers against gambling and conservative Christians in a late-hour push to defeat the Miami-Dade County slot machine referendum. "County voters will decide Jan. 29 whether to allow the county's horse track, dog track and jai-alai fronton to install Class III, Las Vegas-style slot machines like those already operating at parimutuels in Broward County. "The new coalition, No Casinos Miami, bills itself as a 'left-right bipartisan group' that opposes the expansion of gambling in the county on grounds that it will destroy families, prop up a cruel greyhound racing industry and cause addiction and crime. "...Proponents of the referendum said opposition forces fail to highlight the economic benefits of slot machines..." |
