New Mexico Tribes Respond Differently to State

NEW MEXICO – As reported by the Native American Times: "One New Mexico pueblo being sued by the state for failing to pay revenue sharing profits says they are willing to capitulate, while another tribe says they are still protesting terms of the deal.

"State Attorney General Patricia Madrid filed a lawsuit against two tribes and 10 pueblos to force them to pay the state 16 percent of their slot-machine revenue. All but two eventually complied. Now one of them, the Pojoaque Pueblo, says they are ready to fork over an initial $6 million and give the state a portion of their casino proceeds to end the court case.

"…Despite a published report that says newly installed Mescalero Apache leader Mark Chino was agreeable to discussions, another Mescalero official is balking at the revenue sharing terms…"
