New Mexico Tribe Won't Install Electronic Bingo

NEW MEXICO – As reported by the New Mexican: "San Juan Pueblo agreed Thursday not to install a new type of electronic bingo device at its casino north of Española.

"The games look and play somewhat like slot machines but are not subject to revenue-sharing agreements with the state of New Mexico.

"A statement issued by Gov. Bill Richardson's office quoted recently elected San Juan Gov. Joe Garcia as saying the tribe had agreed 'in the spirit of good faith' to Richardson's request last year that San Juan not install such devices.

"…Richardson is concerned that any new kind of gambling machine could affect the stability of the compacts, Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said Thursday.

"State agreements give pueblos a near-monopoly on casino gambling but require the tribes to pay the state 8 percent of their slot-machine proceeds.."
