New Mexico lottery scholarship bills proposed

SANTA FE, Mexico – As reported by the Farmington Daily News: "Three bills that would have expanded access to the lottery scholarship were tabled in the Senate Education Committee on Monday, including one that would have allowed the dependents of military personnel transferred out of New Mexico to qualify.

"Committee Chairwoman Cynthia Nava, D-Las Cruces, said that of the three, that was the bill she felt most emotional about.

"…Senate Bill 687 would have allowed the dependents of military personnel who are state residents, still paying state income taxes but stationed out of the state, to qualify for the scholarship.

"…Nava compared those students to children accidentally left out of the storm cellar. But Majority Floor Leader Michael Sanchez, D-Belen, who was an original sponsor of the lottery bill, said all of those issues were considered when the bill was drafted…"
