New Mexico legislators vote on compacts

NEW MEXICO – As reported by the Albuquerque Tribune: "Legislators might not approve proposed new compacts between the state and its gambling tribes, but they'll get a chance to vote this session, said House Speaker Ben Lujan.

"'I think it's doable to get to the floor,' said Lujan, a Namb‚ Democrat. 'Now what that vote turns out to be is hard to say.'

"Gov. Bill Richardson and a group of tribal leaders have agreed in principal to changes to the compacts. A group of 16 House and Senate leaders will be appointed as soon as this week to start scrutinizing the deal.

"The agreement, which would allow more state oversight and a higher revenue-sharing rate in exchange for a longer compact, must be approved by the full House and Senate. It adds one more big topic to the 60-day session that started about three weeks ago…"
