New Mexico Governor Signs Gaming Compact

7 November 2003

SANTA FE, New Mexico – As reported by the Associated Press: "Gov. Bill Richardson has signed a gambling agreement between the state and the Navajo Nation for a long-sought casino at the To'hajiilee chapter near Albuquerque.

"Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr., who did not attend the signing ceremony Thursday, signed the compact in September. It's identical to those signed by 11 other tribes since 2001.

"…Plans have not been finalized, but it likely will contain 700-800 slot machines and could include a truck stop, hotel, restaurant and sports and recreation facilities, tribal officials said…"
