New Mexico deal in question

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – As reported by the Las Cruces Sun News: "A casino proposed for Chaparral could hurt New Mexico State University's chances of receiving a 50 percent ownership share of Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.

"When a casino proposed for Anthony first came to light two years ago, Sunland Park racetrack owner Stan Fulton added a caveat to an earlier offer he made to give NMSU a half-stake in the racing operation upon his death: The university will only get the lucrative share if no other casino exists within a 50-mile radius when he dies.

"Fulton said the Chaparral casino proposal, similar to one for Anthony, would be within a 50-mile radius of his Sunland Park racetrack, and would negate his offer should it be built.

"…The straight-line distance between Sunland Park and Chaparral is roughly 20 miles.

"The Tigua Indians of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo are seeking permission from the federal government to place a casino on a 10-acre site just north of the New Mexico-Texas border in southeastern Doña Ana County. In December 2004, the Jemez Pueblo and Santa Fe businessman Gerald Peters requested land in Anthony for a casino…"
