New Mexico compacts may change

SANTA FE, New Mexico – As reported by the Albuquerque News: "Lawmakers dealing with the long-term agreements that govern tribal gambling in the state have three chances to make changes, starting today.

"Already, some members of the Compacts Committee are mulling ideas they want the Governor's Office and tribal representatives to consider, signaling that the committee could have some lengthy meetings ahead.

"The 16-member panel meets today for the second time. It will also meet Saturday.

"Rep. Larry Larra¤aga, an Albuquerque Republican, has two potential changes to the compacts, which govern revenue sharing between the state and its gambling tribes.

"He'd like the state to set up a fund using gambling revenue that would help nongambling tribes pay for infrastructure improvements.

"…Larra¤aga also would like some of the revenue the state gets from the gambling compacts to go into a fund to help fight gambling addiction. Under his plan, the state also would contribute money to help problem gamblers…"
