New Mexico Casino Study Released1 October 2004ANTHONY, New Mexico – As reported by the Associated Press: "A tribal casino would create about 950 jobs in Anthony with an average yearly salary of $29,000, according to a study by a hospitality and gaming firm. "The results of the study commissioned by developer Gerald Peters of Santa Fe and Jemez Pueblo, who have proposed the casino, were released Wednesday. "The study estimated that the casino would draw an estimated 2.7 million visitors annually and would pump $30 million into the local economy each year. "…It says 700 slot machines now serve an El Paso-Juarez population of 2.2 million. Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino is the only gambling site in Dona Ana County. "If a new casino is approved, the area would have 2,235 slot machines, less than a third of Albuquerque's market, which has a smaller population, the study said. "…Several southern New Mexico lawmakers and business operators have joined the Committee to Protect Dona Ana County to oppose the proposed casino.
