New Mexico Casino Plan Get Mixed Response

ANTHONY, New Mexico – As reported by the El Paso Times: "A proposal for a tribal casino near Anthony, N.M., has many residents excited, while some in Sunland Park are worried about the future of Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino and the town itself.

"…Three sites in Doña Ana County, including Anthony, are being considered for the Jemez Casino, which is being proposed by the Jemez Pueblo and Gerald Peters, a Santa Fe art dealer. The preliminary site in Anthony is 124 acres at the northwest corner of Interstate 10 and O'Hara Road-State Highway 404.

"…Stan Fulton, owner of Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino, announced Wednesday through Manager Harold Payne that Fulton would give half the stock and net profits in his racetrack and casino to New Mexico State University.

"…Sunland Park Mayor Ruben Segura said that although a new casino would probably take tourists from Sunland Park, he is concerned that the state isn't taking some things into consideration. A saturation of gambling venues in El Paso, Juárez and New Mexico, Segura said, would create economic problems for people in the community who frequent the casino.

"…Many Anthony residents feel the casino would bring much-needed jobs to the area and raise property values near the casino…"
