New Jersey VLT Proposal Criticized

2 March 2005

NEW JERSEY – As reported by the Standardbred: "Acting New Jersey Governor Richard Codey's proposal to install video lottery terminals at the Meadowlands to fill a $4 million budget hole was met with some opposition yesterday.

"Codey's proposal forecasts the state would generate $150 million in the first six months of 2006, when a temporary facility would be established at the Meadowlands, the Courier Post reports.

"…Legislators from Monmouth County and the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association want assurances that horse racing would benefit from the machines, and Assemblyman Michael J. Panter Jr. said if tracks don't get some of the revenue to increase their purses, horse racing may leave New Jersey to surrounding states where races are more lucrative.
