New Jersey Sports Betting Bill to Get Assembly Hearing25 November 2004TRENTON, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Assembly Speaker Albio Sires, D-Hudson, said Wednesday he will allow a Dec. 2 hearing on a bill that would ask voters to bring sports betting to Atlantic City casinos. "'Sports betting is a very intriguing idea that could help solidify the financial standing of Atlantic City's casinos while producing a new revenue stream for state programs that help seniors and residents with disabilities,' Sires said. 'This looks to me to be a very doable initiative.' "The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew, D-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, is just a first step, however. To bring sports betting to Atlantic City, voters would have to support a referendum. Then, either New Jersey or the casino industry would have to successfully challenge a federal law that limits sports betting to Nevada, Oregon, Delaware and Montana…" |
