New Iowa Casino Licenses On Hold

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "The new head of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission said Thursday that she doesn't expect to consider granting additional casino licenses until early 2008.

"Kate Cutler of Council Bluffs, a corporate lawyer in Omaha, was elected Thursday to a one-year term as the commission's chairwoman. She succeeds Diane Hamilton of Storm Lake, who will remain on the commission after serving the past two years as chairwoman.

"The commission last year awarded four new gambling licenses, including licenses for casinos that have since opened in Worth County and Emmetsburg. A third casino will open in September in Riverside, south of Iowa City, while the fourth will open next spring in Waterloo.

"…Cutler noted the commission has not adopted a formal moratorium on issuing additional licenses, meaning it still will listen to any developer who wants to make a proposal for a new casino. In addition, she said, Iowa will have a new governor early next year when Gov. Tom Vilsack leaves office, raising the prospect that some commissioners could be replaced by new people with different views on gambling…"
