New Hampshire casino expansion proposed

NEW HAMPSHIRE -- As reported by the Sea Coast News: "Like many states, New Hampshire has budget funding problems. Gov. John Lynch has already proposed $50 million in cuts this year and he is expected to propose even more for next year's budget due to a worsening economy.

"In a state adverse to a sales or income tax, finding new revenues to pay for services and administration is always an issue the Legislature must address, but the pessimistic economic outlook and a new and expensive state education funding plan has proponents of expanded gambling asking local leaders to take another look at the controversial moneymaker.

"Opponents say putting slot machines in state racetracks, such as the Seabrook Greyhound Park, or building a casino would bring corruption and crime, lead to addiction and harm New Hampshire's overall quality of life.

"But proponents say that if done right video gambling and casinos would bring in enough money to pay for the state's needs and fund programs to mitigate problems such as gambling addiction.

"State Sen. Lou D'Allesandro, D-Manchester, has long supported expanded gaming in New Hampshire. His proposal to put video gambling machines in state racetracks and grand hotels in the North Country was given a thumbs down on Wednesday by the Senate Ways and Means Committee, essentially killing any chance for passage in the Legislature..."
