New Bedford still considered for tribal casino18 May 2007MASSACHUSETTS -- As reported by the South Coast Daily: "New Bedford is still 'very much in the running' for a proposed Indian casino, even though the tribe has gained control over 325 acres of land in Middleboro, a Mashpee Wampanoag tribal spokesman said yesterday. "'I think people assume that Middleboro is a frontrunner because the tribe owns land there, but it shouldn't be considered as having a leg up on any attractive option that may present itself, and New Bedford is clearly an attractive option,' tribal spokesman Scott Ferson said. "Tribal Council Chairman Glenn Marshall is scheduled to meet privately with New Bedford Mayor Scott W. Lang and city officials Monday. "...Mr. Ferson said New Bedford's population base and its surroundings — waterfront, fishing boats and historic buildings — would make it an intriguing location for the tribe.
