Nevada's Alcohol Bill Could Help Big Casinos

31 May 2001

CARSON CITY, Nevada—May 31, 2001 –As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “There's little time left in the 2001 session, but apparently time enough for casino lobbyists to seek a last-minute bill that helps affiliated clubs move booze around Nevada -- sidestepping some wholesalers.

”…The bill could be utilized by gambling giants such as Park Place, Harrah's and Mandalay Resort Group, which have numerous resorts around Nevada, from the Reno-Tahoe area in the north to Las Vegas and Laughlin in the south.

”…Under AB669, a casino could ship any of its liquor purchased, for example, in Las Vegas to an affiliate casino in Reno or Tahoe. Normally, the affiliate in Reno or Tahoe would buy from a local wholesaler.

”No special permits would be needed to truck the booze from one end of the state to the other.

”Critics say the bill could benefit certain wholesalers with a limited number of liquor brands at one end of the state but a full selection at the other.

”…The selection at one end typically would be limited because a competitor has the other brands -- but the wholesaler could sell to a casino in its full-selection area that could ship booze to an affiliate in the wholesaler's limited-selection area…”
