Nevada Senator's Proposed Gambling Tax Dies in Committee13 April 2001CARSON CITY, Nevada –April 13, 2001—As reported by the Associated Press: “Despite a looming $150 million state budget shortfall, a Senate panel has killed a move by state Sen. Joe Neal to levy higher gambling and business profits taxes. ”The Taxation Committee on Thursday rejected efforts by Neal, D-North Las Vegas, to levy an 8 percent gambling tax and a 4 percent net business profits tax. The two-pronged proposal would have raised more than $500 million a year. ”…After killing his tax proposals - for the second consecutive legislative session - the committee also killed Neal's SB104, to have an advisory ballot question in 2002 asking voters whether they favored higher gambling taxes. ”…Neal said there's no argument the state needs more revenue to provide vital services to Nevadans, and there's no other tax plan in the Senate. ”…Neal has tried unsuccessfully repeatedly to increase gambling taxes. A petition he circulated last year to raise the tax didn't get enough signatures to qualify as a ballot question…” |
