Nevada Lawmakers Discuss State Lottery13 April 2001CARSON CITY, Nevada –April 13, 2001 – As reported by the Associated Press: “Looking for solutions to the state's revenue woes, Nevada lawmakers are considering a bill that would create a Nevada state lottery, with tickets sold only in casinos. ”Modeled on lotteries in more than 40 other states, AJR11 would ask the Legislature, and eventually voters, to approve a state lottery. Money generated would help pay for K-12 textbooks, technology, teacher salaries and school buildings. ”…Legislators have tried unsuccessfully several times over the past 100 years to amend the Nevada Constitution to allow for a state-run lottery. Attempts in the past 20 years have been defeated by the casino industry, which feared a state-run lottery would compete with its profits. ”AJR 11 hasn't drawn casino industry opposition this time because the measure would limit the location of ticket sales to casinos…” |
